S-TESL Instructors

S-TESL's academic staff works together on the school's curriculum and standards. They participate in an electronic discussion list, and meet together to discuss curricular issues at least twice a year. The group efforts reflect the following experience: They have at least master's degrees in TESOL, English, linguistics, education, or cross- cultural studies.

Members of the staff have traveled and/or worked in Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, and South America. They speak Russian, German, Japanese, French, Malay, and Spanish. They have many of years experience teaching ESOL, EFL, and TESOL.

Ellen Barrett

MS in Elementary Education, Northern Illinois University; Certificate of Graduate Study in Teaching English as a Second Language and Bilingual Education, has taught EFL in Ecuador and Spain, taught elementary ESL in Illinois and currently teaches ESL in Renton, Washington. Ellen provides training to mainstream teachers on effective ESL practices, including SIOP. Ellen teaches in the evening program.

dr. Larissa Chruprina

Ph. D. in Education with concentrations in Adult Education and ESOL from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, TN; MA in Linguistics/EFL from National University in Kharkiv, Ukraine.

Larissa has 20 years of experience in teaching ESOL and in teacher training in this country and abroad. Research interest in Applied Linguistics, Intercultural Communication, & Self-Directed Learning in ESOL. Larissa also teaches Linguistics within TESOL Program at Seattle University.

Alysan Croydon
MIT in ESL, School for International Training, has over twenty years of teaching experience in many settings, including Brazil, Egypt, Portugal, and Costa Rica. She is also a teacher trainer for the Tacoma Community House which provides training to adult education teacher and volunteers. Alysan teaches in the evening program.
Joanne Dufour
MS in Social Studies Education, University of Pennsylvania, taught ESOL in several settings at the secondary level for eighteen years. She has been a teacher educator for Western Washington, Central Washington and Heritage Universities and has had extensive experience developing curriculum. Joanne teaches in the evening program.

Lyn Eisenhour
MA/TESOL, Seattle University, BA in Near Eastern Civilizations, University of Washington, has taught in Turkey. Lyn is also anABE/ESOL instructor at Edmonds Community College. Lyn teaches evening classes for S-TESL in both Seattle and the Eastside center.

 

Amy Fenning
M.Ed. Adult Education and Training (special emphasis in TESOL), Seattle University, has taught ESL and EFL at colleges/universities in the US, Turkey, Germany, and Japan. Amy was a teacher trainer at S-TESL in Seattle for several years, and has created online classes for S-TESL. Personal Statement: Teaching ESOL is not only an adventure but a chance to participate first-hand in our global community.
Caro Gerber
MA, TESOL, Seattle University; MA, English, University of Oregon, Certificate in Teaching English as a Second or Foreign Lanuage, S-TESL, is an ESOL instructor at North Seattle Community College. Caro has also taught EFL in Finland, and Slovakia, and has taught our onsite ESOL class. Caro now teaches the pronunciation course in the evening program.
Josephine Knight Hirschman
M.A. International and Comparative Education, George Peabody College for Teachers of Vanderbilt University, has taught content subjects in Malaysia and the United States, has supervised practicing students for Seattle University, and has been a state-wide monitor for a family literacy program. She has been a teacher educator at S-TESL since 1989, and has taught seven different classes at the School of TESL, and now teaches in the online format.

Personal Statement:

Dr. Suzan Kobashigawa

Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Linguistics, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, M.A.T., School for International Training. She taught English in Japan, Japanese in the United States and is currently an Associate Professor at Northwest College. Suzan teaches online classes for S-TESL

 

Daniel Noyes
Dan was born and raised in the Seattle area. He attended Willamette University where he received a B.S. in History, followed by a Masters of Arts in Teaching Degree. In addition to Social Studies, he is endorsed in ESL. Dan has taught Elementary ESL in the Highline School District and has spent the past five years in Ankara, Turkey. There, he taught High School English Lit classes and for the past three years, taught Academic English at Bilkent University. Outside of teaching, he spends his time pointing out the hidden genius of The Simpsons and the more obvious evils of Starbucks. Dan teaches in Highline School District in addition to online classes for S-TESL.
Funda Pehlivanoglu Noyes
MA/English Literature and BA/Foreign Language Education (English), Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey. Advanced Certificate in TESOL, School of Teaching ESL. Funda has taught academic English in Turkey and now teaches at the University of Washington and S-TESL's online program. Funda teaches in the evening and online programs.

 

Karen Sandy
Karen completed her TESOL certificate at the School of Teaching ESL in 1998. She and her family immediately moved to Japan, where they lived until 2007. In Japan, Karen taught ESL and Art. Now, she teaches the ESL class at S-TESL and plans to be teaching Art in an area high school.
Denny Sargent
M.A. History (Cross-Cultural Studies) Western Washington University and the Certificate in Teaching English as a Second or Foreign Language from the School of TESL, taught ESL at ELS Language Center in Seattle and in Japan at Sundai Junior College. He worked at American Cultural Exchange in Seattle as a center director and as Director of Marketing. At the School of TESL he teaches all components of Intensive I and in the evening program.

Personal Statement:

As teachers of English we foster real communication which leads to sharing and cross-cultural understanding. This empowers our students, brings personal fulfillment and growth, and facilitates the emergence of a humane global future.

Lynn Stafford-Yilmaz

M.A., TESOL, Monterey Institute of International Studies, has taught ESL for fifteen years in the USA, Japan, and Turkey and currently teaches at Bellevue Community College. She is well known for her books on test preperation, in particular for the TOEIC and TOEFL tests. She currently teaches in the evening program.
